Stoke Newington Literary Festival is back this year after a two-year break due to Covid and they’re looking for volunteers.
This year the event is being scaled back a little and is temporarily moving to Newington Green, with venues including the Unitarian Chapel and the Mildmay Club (which featured in Killing Eve and was where Stewart Lee filmed the comedy Vehicle).
It takes place from June 3rd-5th (Jubilee Bank Holiday weekend). Organiser Liz Vater said: “Although we’re republicans at heart, we’ll be bringing some alternative festival vibes to the proceedings.
“So many arts organisations have gone to the wall during the pandemic so we can’t wait to run a fun-packed, thought-provoking programme of events again.
“We’ll miss some of our favourite partners like The Spence and Petit Coin but we’ll be spreading the LitFest love to all the great businesses on Newington Green.”
The festival team are in the middle of programming at the moment and have yet to announce the full line-up. However, Will Sergeant from post-punk group Echo and the Bunnymen will be talking about his memoir and doing a DJ set.
Liz added: “We’re really thrilled to be back this year after two years of not being able to run events.”
The festival was cancelled due to Covid in 2020 and, despite planning a scaled back version last year, organisers made the difficult decision that it wasn’t safe enough to go ahead.
As always, a series of authors events will be taking place at William Patten Primary for local children – this year organisers hope to film these workshops to reach more schools in Hackney.
Volunteers are needed to help make the festival a success. Liz added: “We’re always on the look-out for new people to get involved. It’s a great way to feel part of the community and meet new people.”
