In this two-minute read, we look at what we can all do to play a part in the fight against climate change.
It’s never been more evident in human history that we need to change the way we live if the planet is to have a future.
So, this year’s World Earth Day, which takes place on Friday, 22 April, has never been more important.
The day which has been taking place across the globe for more than 50 years, aims to raise awareness of what we can all do to make a difference.
But we realise this is more than just something we do for a day, so we’re encouraging people to consider some of the ten tips below to adapt the way we all live to a more sustainable, environmentally friendly way.
Here are some tips on how to go green this Eart Day!
- Choose public transport, cycling or walking where you can, to reduce your carbon footprint.
- Don’t sit with your engine idle. Turn of your car when you park to reduce emissions, use less fuel and improve air quality.
- Ditch throwaway fashion culture. Buy second-hand instead of new to reduce overflow of landfills and emissions from production.
- Re-purpose, upcycle and fix items instead of taking them to the tip
- Eat locally produced food that is naturally in season which will reduce the amount of food being shipped from overseas.
- Wash clothes at 30 degrees or lower. This will reduce energy consumption and keep clothes looking newer for longer
- Shower instead of bath. A shower typically uses half the amount of water than filling up a bath.
- Install solar panels, biomass boilers or air source heat pumps to supply power to your home.
- Consider using an electric car.
- Use LED lightbulbs which use less energy than regular bulbs.
- Change your search engine to plant trees https://www.ecosia.org
- Turn off the tap when you brush your teeth to reduce water consumption
- Check for leaks from pipes and toilets to reduce water consumption
- Take measures to exclude draughts in your home to reduce your energy consumption by keeping your home
- Recycle all paper, plastic, newspaper, glass and aluminium.
