Inspirational women laid to rest in Abney Park

Buried in Abney Park Cemetery; but never forgotten.

This International Women’s Day we’re retelling the stories of the inspirational women who challenged inequality and helped create a fairer future. They include a suffragette who spent time in Holloway Prison, those who transformed education for the blind, a circus performer, a nurse who worked alongside Florence Nightingale and the first British woman to fly a hot air balloon solo.

The stories of these women and others buried at Abney Park will be told in a special film by the Hackney Society at The Rio Cinema on March 11.

Some were buried in unmarked graves, others beneath ornate tombs – their names a footnote to their husbands.  Perhaps the most poignant grave is that of Harriet Delph; a sculpture carved of Purbeck stone of a mourning woman; commissioned by her partner.

The power of community.

We love to support local businesses, schools, charities, and people. Know someone who’d benefit from our support?
