Grassroots football is where confidence is built, friendships are formed, and lifelong opportunities begin. This season, the Hackney District FC Girls team has earned their place at a national football tournament in Swansea after nine rounds of competitive matches. It is a huge achievement for the girls and a proud moment for everyone involved.
About Hackney District FC
Hackney District FC represents the Hackney Primary Schools District Representative Teams. Players are selected from primary schools across the borough to compete at inter-borough, regional and national level. The club is fully inclusive and run entirely by volunteers, relying on fundraising and community support to make sure no child is excluded from playing due to cost.
Why Support Is Needed
Qualifying for a national tournament is an incredible opportunity, but it comes with real costs. Travel, accommodation, food and entry fees quickly add up, and for some families this can be difficult to manage. There was a risk that a small number of players might miss out on the Swansea trip, despite earning their place on the team through hard work and commitment.
How We’re Getting Involved
When the need for support became clear, one of the players’ mums reached out to us for help. Working alongside the club, we teamed up to set up a community fundraiser to make sure every girl who qualified can take part in the tournament. The fundraiser is focused on covering essential costs, with any additional funds going towards practical extras such as tour T-shirts and kit, helping the team feel proud and united when representing Hackney.
Why This Matters
This initiative is about more than football. It is about confidence, belonging and making sure young girls are given equal opportunities to take part in sport, regardless of their background. As women’s football continues to grow, it is vital that access at grassroots level remains open and inclusive, so every child who earns their place gets the chance to step onto the pitch.
