A Brief History
Thetford boasts a fascinating past dating back to the Anglo-Saxon period and was once the capital of East Anglia. The town played a pivotal role in medieval England and was home to one of the largest priories in the country before the Dissolution of the Monasteries. The ruins of Thetford Priory remain a key historical attraction. Thetford also has links to Thomas Paine, the political philosopher and revolutionary, who was born here in 1737. The town's military heritage is evident in its role as a training ground for British and American forces during World War II.
