Maternity leave can be many things at once.

It can be joyful, exhausting, grounding and disorientating. For many women, it is also a time when confidence shifts, career momentum pauses, and questions about work, money and identity begin to surface.

Mums Who Build exists to meet that moment.

For more than a year now, we’ve been hosting monthly Mums Who Build sessions at our Church Street office in Stoke Newington, and what has grown from them is a thoughtful, supportive and genuinely empowering community of mums and female entrepreneurs.

More than baby groups

Mums Who Build, aka The MOB, was created to offer something that is surprisingly rare during maternity leave: intellectual stimulation, practical skills and space to talk honestly about work, money and ambition.

Founded by Georgie Harris and Bex Coxshall, The MOB was born from lived experience. Both had successful careers before becoming mums and encountered first-hand how difficult it can be to regain confidence, direction and financial clarity after time away from work.

Rather than accepting that as the norm, they built the community they wished had existed themselves.

The sessions are welcoming, inclusive and intentionally relaxed. Babies are always part of the picture, and the focus is on conversation rather than performance. There is no pressure to “have it all figured out”, only encouragement to explore ideas and support one another.

A year of community in Stoke Newington

Since launching in Stoke Newington, the monthly sessions have brought together mums from a wide range of backgrounds, careers and stages of life.

Some attendees are thinking about returning to employment. Others are building businesses, freelancing, or simply looking for space to think again. What connects them is a shared desire for confidence, connection and agency.

Over time, the sessions have covered topics including business skills, financial literacy, wellbeing and long-term planning, always grounded in real experience and open conversation.

The atmosphere is calm, honest and supportive. Less about networking, more about belonging.

The relaunch of MOB+

This month also marks the relaunch of MOB+, an expanded offering designed for those who want deeper support around business skills, financial confidence and long-term thinking.

MOB+ builds on the foundations of the community, offering structured learning alongside peer support, while remaining accessible and inclusive.

It reflects the reality that ambition does not disappear during maternity leave, it simply changes shape.

Why this matters

There is a persistent gap in how society supports women during and after maternity leave, particularly when it comes to confidence, financial knowledge and career progression.

Mums Who Build addresses that gap quietly and thoughtfully, by creating space rather than prescribing solutions.

It is about reconnecting with ideas, skills and confidence at a pace that works for each individual.

Looking ahead

Watching this community grow over the past year has been a privilege.

Mums Who Build is a reminder that meaningful support doesn’t need to be loud or performative. Sometimes it’s simply about creating the right space, and letting people fill it together.

The power of community.

We love to support local businesses, schools, charities, and people. Know someone who’d benefit from our support?
